Taxis - Taxis can be found all over Cancun and at most hotels, Cabs are affordable and government-regulated, but it is wise to ask the taxi driver before getting into a cab what the charge will be, as rates are not listed on the outside of the cab. Taxi rates depend on distance. Most hotels will list fares at the hotel. If you are not happy with a price the driver is telling you and he will not negotiate just waive him by and get a new taxi.

Driving in Cancun - Depending on the time of year Cancun can be a challenge to get around. Traffic moves at a very fast rate, also there are many one way streets and glorietas, and topes(speed bumbs). While the city is hectic for inexperinced Mexico drivers getting to the attractions is not as bad. The roads to Tulum and Chichen Itza are excellent with numerous gas stations. Just be careful of the Topes, hitting these spped bumps at high speeds can really do a number to your car. |
Getting around Cancun on Foot - You can always explore Cancun on foot. The Hotel Zone is probably the easiest part of Cancun to explore. A red paved path (the ciclopista) winds its way alongside part of Kukulcan Blvd. When crossing the streets, it's important to know that motorists yield to pedestrians on raised crosswalks and yellow crossing only. If you are not on one of these you'll have to wait for a lull in the traffic before attempting to cross. Some crossing in the Hotel Zone have traffic lights indicating when it is safe to walk. |
Boat and Ferries - One of the more exciting ways to get around, and sometimes it is the only way to get to places is by the use of water taxis. Shuttle boats and ferries run to Isla Mujeres daily. Departure to Isla Mujueres can be found in the Zona Hoteleria at either the Emabarcadero docks or the Xcaret Dock. Ferris carry both passengers and vehicles. |
