The twin resorts of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are located in the state of Guerrero on the Pacific Coast of Mexico 144 miles northwest of Acapulco along the coast known as La Costa Grande. Zihuatanejo is a thriving old-world Mexican community that has grown from a small fishing village. It is composed of a natural bay surrounded by several beaches and no high rises. Despite its gradual growth as a popular tourist stop, Zihuatanejo has retained their heritage of a fishing village culture. Due to an influx of tourist in the 70s when resort towns like Cancun and Acapulco were being developed FONATUR looked to make Zihuatenejo the next resort town, however the town people refused the idea of drastically changing the look of the town by having tall buildings blocking the view of the bay. As a result in 1968, Fonatur (Federal Bureau for Tourist Development), expropriated a large coconut plantation and mangrove estuary near Zihuatanejo to create a new resort. They named it Ixtapa. The two towns, just four miles apart commonly referred to as Ixtapa - Zihuatanejo make the perfect combination for enjoying the best of both worlds while on vacation...
