Founded in 1697 by Jesuit missionaries Loreto (or Conchó) was the first Spanish town on the Baja California Peninsula,. It served as the capital of Las Californias from 1697 to 1777. The town of Loreto is located on the coast of the  Sea of Cortés, about 350 km (220 miles) north of the state capital, La Paz. Loreto is a popular tourist destination catering mostly to U.S travelers, mainly in part that it is quickly reached by air or land. Loreto is located 750 miles south of San Diego on the Lower California peninsula in Mexico. Loreto is a more remote destination than other more touristy areas in Baja offering several all – inclusive resort accommodations and small charming hotels. Loreto’s weather is fantastic with year round temperatures averaging in the 80's allowing for almost any outdoor activity such as sailing, kayaking and fishing.
