Known as the Pearl of the Pacific Mazatlan (Mah-Saht-LAHN) is a city in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, on the Pacific coast just across from the most southernmost tip of the Baja peninsula. Mazatlán is a Nahuatl word meaning "place of the deer.” Mazatlan is Mexico's second largest coastal city (after Acapulco), and is also Mexico’s largest commercial port. Mazatlan combines traditional architecture in its Historic Center, known as Old Mazatlan, with modern hotels and restaurants in the Zona Dorada, a 10 km (6 mi) strip with beautiful beaches such as Playa Norte, Playa Gaviotas and Playa Venados. Mazatlan is one of the Mexican Rivera’s premiere resort areas because of its remarkable scenic beauty, beaches and its abundant marine life; that make it an important site for international fishing tournaments.
