Basilica de la Soledad Basilica de la Soledad
The Basilica is the most important religious site in Oaxaca. The basilica was built between 1682 and 1690 to house the holy image of the Virgin of Solitude (Soledad), Oaxaca's patron saint. According to legend, the image of the Virgin was found in the pack of a mule that sat down on an outcropping of rock and refused to get up. When the image was discovered, the Virgin appeared, and a basilica was constructed to commemorate the event.
Hierve el Agua Hierve el Agua
This is an amazing site of nature at its finest. This striking area is formed by two large petrified waterfalls of calcium carbonate and two small spring wells of carbonated water which have the appearance of boiling water when rising, hence the name Hierve el Agua. Zocalo Zocalo
The zocalo is the center of town or the heart of the city. In Oaxaca the zocalo is lined with street venders selling Oaxacan candies, chocolates and corn you can also find things like black clay pots and wooden sculptures. There are several small cafes around the zocalo making it a perfect place to sit back and relax and enjoy amazing Oaxacan coffee or just read a good book.
