Established in 1928, Puerto Escondido (translated literally as “Hidden Port”), began it’s life as a port for shipping the famous coffee of Oaxaca. The area has been inhabited by indigenous populations for centuries including the tribes of Colotopec and Mixtec.
In the 1960’s Highway 200 began to connect all of the towns along the coast and tourists began to discover the town and surfers found its beaches. Its importance as a port diminished as coffee shipments began going by truck instead of boat. However, the port does continue to support a bustling commercial fishing activity; which common fish being caught including marlin and tuna.
Modern Puerto Escondido is a home for fishermen, surfers, vacationers, and an eclectic expatriate community.
The initial pull of the tourist began because of the large, powerful and sometimes perrfect waves of Zicatela beach. Which, according to certain magazines, rate the beach in the top ten of all surfing destinations in the world.
It has retained a bit of its off-the-beaten-path feel and flavor and lacks the large-scale resorts, timeshares, and Club Med type atmosphere of Huatulco
