Queretaro is the capital city of the Mexican State of Queretaro. It was founded in 1531 and its historic center is a World Heritage Site. The official name is Santiago de Queretaro, however most it goes simple as "Queretaro". The city of Queretaro is known for its Colonial architecture and beauty and high quality of life. It is one of the wealthiest cities in Mexico and Latin America. Queretaro has become quite popular with tourists and a tour by trolley takes visitors on a guided visit to the monuments and most important attractions of the city. Some of the places you will see on the tour are the Government Palace of the City, the historic Aqueduct, the Historic Center Gardens, the State Regional Museum, Cultural Center “Manuel Gomez Morin” and several historic churches. Queretaro City also has a large variety of handicrafts, such as ceramics, pottery, leatherworks, jewelry and embroidery. There are two national parks near the city and numerous golf courses, tennis courts, horseback riding trails and other sports facilities. Local festivals include the Fiestas de Santiago de Queretaro in July (the anniversary of the founding of the city,) and the Feria de Navidad de Queretaro (Christmas Fair in December.)
